It’s amazing how the ingenuity of people can overcome massive obstacles in order to achieve new heights. I recently had the privilege of riding in one of those pieces of ingenuity. I can only describe my trip in our long time friend Dwight’s custom built sand car as breath taking. Every inch of the vehicle has been refined to make small boulders feel like pebbles and large ruts feel non-existent. The thrust of the vehicle was unlike anything I have felt thanks to the 500hp V8 that is strapped to the car that weighs less than my first table saw. With a push of the throttle you are pushed into the back of your seat so hard that it feels like an amusement park ride. That combined with the amazement that you are doing this over terrain that I wouldn’t even take your SUV.
This car is built from the ground up to perform over huge bumps and jumps. I was taken back by how smooth the ride was while powering over large ruts, rocks, and dips. It would be a bumpy ride in my pickup at 15 mph while we were hitting close to 90mph and it felt as effortless as a cruise on RT 80. The suspension was built by Colorado Sand Cars in Windsor, Colorado. Their experience with Dakar Rally vehicles contributed to the overwhelming success of Dwight’s project. From the oil dampened suspension to the ultra lightweight carbon fiber body to the impeccable wire harness work this is a true flying dream car. www.coloradosandcars.com
Dwight is a long time fan of Techflex products and has used them beautifully in this project. From engine and lighting harnesses to navigation wiring and hose protection this sand car is a specimen of organization and abrasion defense. Keeping these critical harnesses covered with Techflex sleeving is not simply so this can be the prettiest vehicle on the dune but rather so that when flying through the air at high speed he can be sure his wire and hose systems are ready for more.
Speaking of ready for more I can’t wait for my next ride.
